Relay for Life - Smith Memorial's team: Clownin' Around
2010 Relay for Life of Gresham
This will be Smith Memorial’s second year to enter a team in this event. Relay For Life, July 31 and August 1, is the American Cancer Society’s signature activity and offers us the opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people will be camping out at Centennial High School from 7:00PM to 10:00AM taking turns walking or running around the track. The atmosphere surrounding this event is truly memorable.  There is something for all ages -- games, food, music -- you can’t help feeling part of something very special. Entire families participate!

Relay For Life is more than just a fundraiser. It’s a life-changing experience. At Relay, every person in the community has a chance to celebrate, remember, and fight back. And every person who participates joins others around the globe as part of this worldwide movement to end cancer. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event.

Smith Memorial’s team this year is titled Clowning Around. If you are interested in being on our team or would like to learn more about the Relay, please contact Carolyn Wilson, our team captain at 503-661-4678 call the church office or click here.
Guest Author Jerry Sittser's recent visit
photo of jerry sittserSmith Memorial thanks Professor Jerry Sittser for coming and sharing his time with us this past weekend. Below are some memories from our weekend with him.

Pastor Cynthia recommends you read one or both of the following books:

Love One Another: Becoming the Church Jesus Longs For asks the question: What does the church look like when it functions with real love?  Examining select "one another" commands, the book shows how we can bring these qualities into our relationships.

A Grace Disguised: How the Soul Grows Through Loss describes Sittser's effort to cope with the tragic accident that claimed the life of his wife, mom, and younger daughter and injuries to his family in a direct hit of their minivan by a drunk driver going 85 mph.
In case you do not know this beloved best selling Christian author speak, Jerry is a professor at Whitworth University and the author of several books including Love One Another and A Grace Disguised.

Smith Memorial Turns 120!
On October 19th, 2010, Smith Memorial Presbyterian Church will be 120 years old!  To prepare for that milestone, the Session started a year-long celebration beginning with Worldwide Communion Sunday October 4, 2009.  During the year long celebration, people, productive paths, and the promises that have been fulfilled throughout the history of our church will be recognized.  We will recall changes in the United States history since 1890 when the worshipping community first gathered in what is now the Fellowship Hall.
