Q: What time are the services? A: 8:30 and 11. They are usually identical, with the choir singing at one or the other or both.
Q: What can I expect when I visit on Sunday morning? A: It's not scary. New people come every week. Walk in the door and it's warm and bright. There are friendly people of all ages and life situations. The usher gives you a bulletin (service program) and answers any questions. Your kids are welcome in the service. There might be around 100 people attending. The people you sit next to might be as new as you, or they might have come here for 75 years. There will be music from piano, organ or praise band and lots of singing to God, using either a hymnal or words projected on the screen. We pray often, bless each other with a greeting of peace, and hear God's word from our pastor. It's about an hour. There's free coffee and a 50% chance of homemade cookies after.
Q: What kind of a church is this? A: We are with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Visit www.pcusa.org for information on missions and more. We're 118 years old - that's the original building out front - and we're a fun group who love to make new friends. We take seriously our calling to follow Jesus Christ, and we don't miss a Sunday if we can help it. This is the community where our faith is strengthened. There's a food barrel in the foyer to collect for the needy, all year long.
Q: What do you believe? A: We worship God, our Creator; trust in Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Word of God, and live by the Holy Spirit. The Bible is God's word to us and is our rule for faith and life. We hold to The Nicene Creed, The Apostles' Creed and The Brief Statement of Faith. Our pastor is a graduate of Fuller Theological Seminary and describes herself as a theological and political moderate. Within the congregation, there is a broad range of opinions on various issues, while we all hold tight to the principles in the above creeds.
Q: What about our kids? A: We welcome children. Kids are an important part of worship. (Are you in the "terrible twos"? We also have nursery care for ages 0-5.) Small children are wiggly by God's design. Feel free to take them out during the service and bring them back in as needed. We love kids and understand their needs.
During the service, children are invited to interact with the pastor, light candles, offer prayer requests, carry offering plates and more. They may receive communion if they are baptized and you are teaching them about the meaning of it. Sunday School for all ages is held at 9:45, concurrent with adult classes. For more information, see "God's Children in Worship" on the children's page or just ask the pastor's third grader, who will probably tell you more than she should.
Q: What about accomodations for people using wheelchairs? A: We cut two pews in half to make room for you, whether you like to sit in the front or the last row. From worship to coffee to adult classes, everything is all on one level. For other special needs, contact the church or ask an usher.
Insider tips to know...
1. When the parking lot is full, follow the "driveway" sign down to the meadow and park on the grass. You can actually get a lot closer to the building than people who parked at the end of the lot. Our pastor always parks there on Easter.
2. Northeast 223rd is narrow and busy. When you leave, if turning left (south), take your time and wait until all is clear before pulling out. It will be safer after the road construction project is completed.
3. The road will be closed between the church and Sandy Blvd. for a number of months during the replacement of the 223rd railroad bridge. Check our construction page for the latest information.
